Nae Tumulak Brown

Dancer, Teacher, and Artist in Anchorage, Alaska

I was born and raised in culturally diverse Anchorage, Alaska. Raised by my mother and grandfather I was immersed in Lingít culture and values growing up, mostly through song and dance. This exposure certainly shaped the adult I have become. I grew up with the Anchorage Tlingit & Haida Dancers, learning from strong Lingít women who played the roles of auntie or grandma like our people have done for thousands of years. From these strong Lingít Sháa I learned about leadership and respect; for self and one another. It was through study of the Lingít language that I have began to learn a new way of looking at the world through my ancestors mind.

Gunalchéesh haat yigoodí.
Thank you for coming.

I studied at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau, AK in Alaska Native Languages and Studies with a Minor in Lingít Language. Lingít language brought me to college and continues to be a priority for myself and my family. My ultimate goal is to give back to my community and I see education being the perfect avenue. As a PITAAS recipient (Preparing Indigenous Teachers and Administrators for Alaska Schools), I will go on to pursue a Master's of Arts in Teaching through UAS. In the meantime, I am exploring my teaching options back in Anchorage and promoting language revitalization.

CURRENTLY:

I teach a weekly Lingit language class along side Kyle Worl. Our classes take place at the UAA Commons every Sunday and are open to the community.

I continue to lead the Anchorage Tlingit and Haida Dancers. We practice weekly, and welcome anyone who is interested in learning.

I am currently self-employed as a bead worker and regalia maker. I began beading as a young child and I'm eager to create and grow as an artist.I create regalia and bead work upon request.
