History Of Los Angeles

California is an American state where the famous city of Los Angeles is located. The city which is often called the Entertainment Capital of the World, became a city on May 23, 1835, and was incorporated on April 4, 1850. Los Angeles is the biggest city in the United States of America by territory, as it occupies a total of 1300 square km.

The pre-colonial history of the city shows that the Tongya Native tribe occupied the Los Angeles coastal area, together with the Chumash tribes before the arrival of the Europeans. The Tongya tribe, also called the Gabrieleño people, named the area Iyáangẚin Spanish, and this means "poison oak place".

In 1771, the Mission San Gabriel Archángel was built on the directions of Franciscan friar Junípero Serra, and it became the first mission in the area.

By September 4, 1781, the " Los Pobladores ", a group of forty-four settlers came to the area and founded the city. It was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles, which means the “Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels”. In 1821, New Spain got its independence from the Spanish Empire, and became a part of Mexico.
