Everywhere I find a canvas. And begin to fill it with beautiful images. It became a recurring theme in my life.
At my first job as a high school teacher I noticed the walls were dull. I used the classroom walls as my canvas and began filling them up with beautiful displays. The students responded so well, teachers began to notice. Soon teachers wanted their own wall space. Soon after that all the classroom walls and billboards were decorated colorful and bright.
I left teaching and at my second place of business there was a long dreary hallway with a blank bulletin board. Every time I passed it I couldn’t help to imagine this as my canvas. I didn’t even ask who was in charge of this billboard, instead I just started decorating it with bold, bright images. Soon others started filling up the rest of the billboards bold and bright.
When the internet first started, I took a basic course. Well, it didn’t take long before the computer screen became my canvas and I started building websites.
I loved building websites because it allowed me to have a fresh new “canvas” all the time. But life gets in the way and I continued working my real job.
And then Hurricane Maria happened. I was in Puerto Rico before the storm hit and couldn’t get a flight out of Puerto Rico to escape the storm. Somehow I was going to be in a hurricane and there was nothing I can do about that.
The first thing I remembered was the howling of the winds. I was so scared that I wasn’t scared. I witnessed the power of mother nature. And that changes you. I started thinking of how quickly life can change. How much we take for granted. And how every moment is not guaranteed. So why waste it? What did I really want to do? What really makes me happy, brings me joy?
When I returned home to Jersey, I returned to all the list of things to do that I had left undone. The number one thing that I had to finish was my daughter’s Quinceanera photo album. I sat on my laptop designing it. Hundreds of pictures from 4 different sources. It took me 6 days and nights until it was perfect, but it felt like no time at all! THIS is what I love to do!
Then I remembered the thank you cards. I hadn’t mailed them out. I designed the cards before going to Puerto Rico. That’s when it hit me. I am always creating and designing. THIS is what I should be doing!
Let me design something beautiful for you!
