My friend Ermanno tells me that shoes make the man. Scarpe fanno l'uomo. I like shoes, and I judge the people who wear them. What am I supposed to do? I have an affinity for style, even to the expense of substance. After all, “our journey is entirely imaginary”, the journalist once said, and therefore our cravings for reality and concreteness lead us to disappointment and fatigue. I choose, instead, to examine the side of being that is the high life.

When I arrived in Milano at the age of 28, the jet set became my world, and now, as I observe a wrinkle I had not seen before, and pen about more experience than I can fully recall, I prize the parties, the celebrities, the wine, the cafes, the motorcars, like they are the essence of life itself.
