Active in the nonprofit sector, Lale Labuko serves the Omo Child Foundation in his capacity as cofounder. The group, which has a presence in California and the Omo Valley region of Ethiopia, dedicates itself to ending Mingi, a ritualistic practice that involves killing children perceived to be cursed. In addition, the foundation provides direct assistance by furnishing a nurturing environment for youths that have been rescued. In his leadership role with the nonprofit, Lale Labuko oversees daily operations for a home that cares for more than 35 young people between the ages of one and 11.
In recognition of his accomplishments, Lale Labuko garnered the 2013 Lowell Thomas Award, which he shared with renowned philanthropists like Ted Turner. Moreover, he established the Omo Child Club at Hampshire College, where he is presently studying toward his undergraduate degree in economics, African studies, and environmental studies.
