Lara Gomes Garcia

Glasgow, United Kingdom

I am a 25 year-old graduate Architect looking for an opportunity in the field, but far away from home. I did a Master's in Architecture at Instituto Superior Técnico by University of Lisbon as well as an Erasmus year Programme at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. The lastest opportunity allowed me to improve my English level.

In order to develop my Master thesis with the title of "Slums: Projecting with and for the poor. A Case Study in Nicaragua", I went to Nicaragua where I learnt about poor construction such as slums and barrios. I also volunteered as animator and gave English classes to the children from a rural comunity of Ticuantepe at Atelier Favela Nicaragua.

Still during my academic path, I was member of Board of European Students of Technology (BEST), an european students organisation stablished in 95 cities in 33 different countries. This experience allowed me to enrol under 3 different technological courses in 3 different countries (Kaunas, Lithuania; Cluj-Napoca, Romania and Yekaterinburg, Russia), gaving me the chance to meet a variety of cultures from all over the world and ultimately having more than one an International experience

Since a child I used to enroll different Summer Camps, from Portugal to UK. The lastest one was an intensive 2 week English Language Course in Oxford.

Therefore, all my summers while I was doing my academic degree, I became an animator and supervisor of Summer Camps; after 2 years, ultimately promoted as Summer Camps Coordinator.

I do love Portugal, but I feel I am one of those portuguese meant to sail away from their origins in order to visit and work in some other place. As such, my major hobby is travelling as well as reading, watching movies and volleyball.

My desire is to work and help others through my design. Therefore, my biggest dream is to work for UN, particularly for the UN-HABITAT agency.
