This is my third year as the teacher-librarian at Desert Hot Springs High School, and this is my 21st year in the field of teaching. I started off as an elementary teacher in New Orleans, LA where I was born and educated. I graduated from the University of New Orleans in 1993 and I begin teaching professionally that same year. I have taught grades K-8 and adult education.
My first master's was in Education Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, and I initially wanted to work for a university. This all changed after 9-11 when I took a personal inventory and decided that I loved literature and wanted to promote this love to others. It was then that I decided to become a school librarian. I finished my Library and Information Science master in 2012 and I have been a teacher-librarian ever since.
I manage my school's library page and I link sites that are classroom specific and/or based on the needs of our student body. The students are able to connect to the school catalog anytime and anywhere they have an Internet connection. I want to expand this digital presence and include links that promote inquiry and increases the students and staff informational fluency. Being a teacher-librarian allows me to share more resources and on a bigger scale and this presence will assist teachers and students with the new Common Core revolution.
My title and job description is a shape-shifter as it changes based on the needs of my school site. This year, my duties have shifted to supporting teachers and student in identifying and using emerging technology in creative ways. I am trying to learn as much as I can and as quickly as I can so I can support and inspire technology creativity in my school. I am excited to be on this journey.
Some of the things I enjoy doing outside of school are traveling with my husband, reading, cooking, walking my dogs, and listening to science fiction and horror audio podcasts.
