Larry Finer is a scientist with a background in data science, social science, and computer science. He is currently focusing on the first of these, and he recently completed a 12-week intensive course at Metis in New York City, where he gained additional expertise in data acquisition and cleaning, machine learning, and programming. Larry Finer has also served as a computer consultant in Baltimore and New York City, during which time he helped nonprofit clients create websites and designed customized spreadsheet applications to track foundation-asset growth. He is experienced with several programming languages, including Python and Stata, as well as various data wrangling and machine learning processes.

As a social scientist, Larry Finer concentrated on reproductive health. He held multiple positions at the Guttmacher Institute in New York City, and was a senior lecturer at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, where he lectured on sexual and reproductive health. He also worked as a social science analyst with the Population Dynamics Branch at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Rockville, Maryland.

Larry Finer has a doctor of philosophy degree in population dynamics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Harvard University.
