Lars Christensen

I'm a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. I study structures of time from the rhythmic to the dynastic.

My research focuses on musical thought in Imperial China and its relationship to other fields of intellectual history. My dissertation critically examines the reform movement in ritual music during the Northern Song dynasty (960-1127) in relation to music theory discourse, mathematics, visual representations, and temporality.

More broadly, I am interested in intersections of musical thought and understandings of the past across pre-modern Asia. I am also a performer of Javanese gamelan and numerous other kinds of music.
