Lateef Romeo
Student, Artist, and Writer in Brooklyn, New York
I am an artist and a musician. I tend to call myself a lyricist sometimes because I write music more than I play it. I have been creating music since I was about 9 years old. My friends call me a pianist by day; photographer by night. Owning an iPhone is the closest I get to real professional pictures. I may not have a professional camera, but it is so unique because I am able to take really awesome pictures. They come out as if they were professional.
Aside from those attributes, I paint. I am very particular about my craft, but who isn't? I also have a love for technology. I can build electrical circuits, and follow blueprints or schematics. In other words, I know how things work. Remember that fan that broke a year ago? Yeah, I can fix that. My fourth wall can knock you down. You want to know why? I will never notice you. That's because I am also an actor. I have been in many shows and let me tell you, "...life for me ain't been no crystal stair." I was born and raised in New York City. I know what you are thinking. "Of course he is an artist!" Living in this city is such an eye opening experience. You see so many different things. I love living here because it allows you to truly create the vision you see, and allows you to craft the person you want to be.
But, enough of talking about these things. I have goals. I've always wanted to create my own non-profit organization for youths. I actually have started this and I am currently in the process of setting it up. My organization would be called the Between the World and Me Foundation. It would help over three-thousand teens in the greater New York City area with college matriculation, and provide them with ways to serve their communities. It would be available to all students in from ages 12-18 that plan to study a STEM field major in college; science, technology, engineering, and math. I have big hopes to accomplish this. The reach is to see about 70% increase in the amount of youth that apply.
I really want to help. I know what it is like to not have anything growing up, and not having that extra push for someone to help. Eventually, the goal is for the initiative to go national. There is so much to learn, and I hope YOU have learned about me.
