I'm Laura McCollum, an author and independent researcher exploring the folklore, mythology, and traditional culture of Scotland.

I'm currently writing An Encyclopedia of Scottish Myth, Folklore, and Tradition, the culmination of years of research into the people, places, beliefs, customs, and stories that have shaped Scotland's cultural landscape. My work draws on historical sources, archival collections, place-name evidence, and field research to better understand how folklore is rooted in both history and landscape, and why these traditions continue to matter today.

Alongside the encyclopedia, I created The Scottish Traditions Project, where I share research notes, archival discoveries, photography, and the stories behind the work. It's a place to explore Scotland through its folklore, history, and living traditions, one discovery at a time.

When I'm away from my desk, I'm usually planning my next trip to Scotland, photographing historic landscapes, wandering through castles, kirkyards, and forgotten corners of the country, or searching for the kind of places that don't always make it into the guidebooks. I believe some of the best stories are found by slowing down, looking a little closer, and letting curiosity lead the way.
