I grew up in a small, white house in southern California. This small, white house had an immaculate garden with flowers in every direction. As a kid, I loved playing in it. Almost every day, I would see little ladybugs perched on the roses and I instantly became intrigued. It wasn’t until later, I learned that ladybugs are a symbol for good luck around the world. The superstition is if a ladybug lands on you, you’ll have good luck for the day or something good will happen. I never thought much of superstitions but this particular one had some underlying meaning to me. I liked the idea that maybe, just maybe, it could actually be true and good things would happen to me. When I moved from California to Texas, I was devastated and lonely. Before the first day at my new school, my mom brought out this little jewelry box and rested it on the counter before me. Inside was a silver ring, with a silver ladybug on top of the band. She told me, that no matter what I do, where I am, or who I am with, I will always have luck on my side. She knew I missed the garden and the comfort it brought me. My ladybug sits on my left hand and never comes off. Whenever I am going through a tough time or difficult situation, because let’s be honest, life happens, I glance down at my left hand to remind myself that luck is on my side and good things will happen, you just have to look for it.
