My passion for mentoring college students is only outstripped by my desire to help them be successful in their career development. This has been a theme through out my own personal experience in residence life, leadership development, and career counseling. Each conversation I have with a student has the potential to positively impact their life, no matter the circumstance.
We, as student affairs professionals, have the incredible power to influence students' personal and professional development. In my case, I have had that ability in a variety of different settings. Most of my professional experience to date has been in residence life, supervising student leaders in a residence hall setting. So much of the work they do can be directly transferred to any profession - from the medical fields to a humanities discipline - but they often cannot see the connection. Much of my time mentoring those students was spent trying to connect the dots and giving them the language to more effectively speak to their abilities (spending time with them was a lot of fun, too).
Now, in career services, I am able to connect with students in a different way. When they seek me out, it is because they truly need my help. And I could not be happier teaching them the skills they need to be successful in the career exploration process.
I spent my undergrad years at the University of Rhode Island, in my home state, and visiting campus as an alumnus always makes me feel like I made the right choice. My time at URI taught me many things about myself, but most notably, it led me to discover my calling in student affairs.
My passions are countless, but I will name as many as I can: reading, rugby, the Boston Bruins, the ocean, music, painting, drawing, being creative, traveling to new places, adventures of all sorts, embracing technology, spending time with friends and family, URI, being organized, personality inventories, good food, being positive and laughing as much as humanly possible.
