In 2004, the series "Long Way Round" premiered, chronicling the journey of Ewan McGregor, Charley Boorman, and their support crew on the ultimate Adventure Ride. Over the span of 115 days, they ride their BMW Motorcycles on a 20,000 mile adventure around the globe, crossing 12 countries and 19 time zones.
Along the way, everything that could possibly go wrong, does! Flat tires, broken equipment, accidents, lost passports, outdated maps, Mongolian goats, second guessing decisions, and a whole lot of laughter!
After my own chaotic trip on a BMW 1150GS in New Mexico, involving monsoons, hail storms at 80 mph, crashing into cactus in dried out river beds, and swarms of attacking humming birds, it occurred me that Adventure Riding is a lot like a technology Startup...
Despite all the strategizing, planning, and forecasting, a Startup can, and usually will, get messy. Rarely do things ever go exactly according to plan. But that's part of the Adventure. Being able to work with your team to understand what went wrong, how you got there, and what you need to do to get back on track is as important to a Startup as it is to an Adventure around the world...and just as much fun.
