The city of Lake Elmo has always attracted visitors because of its natural beauty. The biggest lake in the city was originally named Bass Lake thanks to its abundance of bass fish and became a resort area soon after a village was established here by settlers. Both the lake and the village were renamed as Lake Elmo because the name was thought to be more pleasing to visitors. That lake is now part of the Lake Elmo Park Reserve and still attracts both locals and people from surrounding cities; but despite the fact that this park is so well known, the City of Lake Elmo has another large park that is considered to be the real gem of the city by a lot of the locals. Sunfish Lake Park was named after Sunfish Lake. In 1974, the city council proposed purchasing this land in order to preserve it and build a park for the local community. The land that was to become Sunfish Lake Park was privately owned and not even being used because it could not be tilled. The city ended up getting the land at a cost that was considerably less than its true value. On September 22, 2009, Sunfish Lake Park became legally protected by the Minnesota Land Trust.
