Legal steroids are steroids that are legal, that is to say, not prohibited by the governing sports organization.

Legal steroids often contain natural or synthetic steroid hormones or substances. This makes sports organizations like full drug screens outside that mimic their effects. Some examples of these substances include boldenone, nandrolone, and trenbolone. These types of steroids can be purchased legally just testing about anywhere in the world without a prescription.

Manufacturers of legal steroids often make claims like: "boost energy," "burn body fat," "increase strength and muscle mass," and so forth. These statements may be accurate, but many of these products are either at best mislabeled (for example labeling a prohormone as a dietary supplement), misplaced (for example, selling asteroid as a dietary supplement), or simply untruthful (for example, selling an oral steroid as injectable).

In the United States, one of the most common legally available steroids is androstenedione. It was banned from use in professional baseball by agreement with the Major League Baseball Players' Association, though it remains legal today. In Australia, where AAS are classified as Schedule III controlled substances, possession without a prescription is illegal. The drug's only approved use in Australia is in treating hypogonadism that a medical practitioner has diagnosed. However, several "underground" retailers still supply these products through mail-order for bodybuilders and athletes to enhance performance and physique.

Legal steroids are also known to be hepatotoxic, so they should only be used for short periods and under the guidance of a physician. Less common side effects might include high blood pressure, cholesterol, hair loss, or kidney problems.

For an athlete looking to bulk up while staying within the legal limits of their governing body, there is perhaps some benefit in considering legal steroids over illegal alternatives. However, the adverse side effects on health need to be balanced against this potential gain.
