An active athlete, Leo Surprenant enjoys long-distance running, as well as the discipline and practice involved with the sport. Long-distance running stands as a unique athletic endeavor, in that it requires a delicate balance of skill and mental prowess. In his passionate pursuit of long-distance running, Leo Surprenant employs numerous conditioning routines to ensure his success in a variety of events. In any long-distance event, all runners should view the race as a whole and not overexert themselves on the first leg, or first half, of the race. Typically, the most common long-distance running events are held on 5- or 10-kilometer stretches of track. Kenenisa Bekele holds the world records for both of these events, at 12:37.35 for 5 kilometers and 26:17.53 for 10 kilometers. Like Leo Surprenant, athletes in either event generally complete extensive training that may include uphill runs designed to increase endurance, intensive sprinting practice that gives them practice for the end of their races, and drills to improve breathing.
