Leslie Fishman
Sullivan County, NY
I'm Leslie Fishman from rural Sullivan County, NY. I graduated December 2014 from Clarion University of Pennsylvania with my MSLS. I received my BA in history/political science from scenic Mount Saint Mary College located in Newburgh, NY. I'm always finding little ways to incorporate history into everyday life adventures. I'm an avid reader of many different genres of literature, so one never knows what I might be checking out. I enjoy traveling and have been blessed to live in Ireland for several years while also traveling to the Balkan Region during the aftermath of the conflict. Lately, I've been collaborating with my local library to introduce fresh ideas and possibilities to the organization, while working closely with the Friends group. More recently, I helped the Friends build their own website for one of my class projects for them to utilize on a permanent basis. It is from this close interaction that I was granted my internship there based on developing platforms geared for a multicultural population.
My experience in the library consists of the role as Youth Coordinator, where I developed and implemented children and teen programming for four years. I also planned events and lectures for the Summer Reading Program while introducing new ways for parents to share in the joy of reading. I believe that every person should be able to read and take pleasure from visiting a library that offers more than just books. During that time, I worked closely with the local community leaders, which ignited a passion in me to become a professional librarian.
I also had the pleasure to work for the local community college for a semester as an Adjunct Librarian. It was during this time where I received hands-on experience from the back end of ILLiad. I also delved slightly into weeding out collections that had become stagnant in the stacks. That opportunity gave me the perspective of just how vital an academic librarian’s role is to society.
