I am a freelance journalist studying Magazine Journalism & Feature Writing at Southampton Solent. The course has enhanced my journalistic skills and has enabled me to have a greater knowledge of media law.
When I'm not writing I like to go running to keep fit, I am very competitive and I like to push myself to the limit and this links in with both my social and my academic life, if you're not going to push yourself to be the best that you can be then why bother? I love football, although I had trials for professional clubs such as Aston Villa as a youngster, I never quite made it as a player, so to keep myself as involved in the sport as possible I spend time writing about the game and giving my opinions. I support Manchester United and enjoy watching the games with my friends; a good pub debate always gives me great inspiration when it comes to writing my football features.
I am talented when it comes to drawing and I sometimes spend time spontaneously drawing different things. This sometimes comes in handy with my work as I can do illustrations to a professional standard, this saves both time and money. I also have a passion for photography, I received a B grade at A-level and I am always looking for unique ways of taking pictures. I am useful on programmes such as InDesign and Photoshop.
I have partaken in two weeks work experience at the NHS Trust in Communications. I wrote some short pieces for their online website and also helped design posters for the hospitals upcoming events. I also analysed their positive and negative press for the year of 2014 which may come in handy when looking for a job in journalism. Spending time here definitely gave me a better understanding of working in a real life office environment which is something that you obviously do not get from university.
