Lexi Fisher

Student in Athens, GA

Hi! I am Lexi Fisher and I am from Ellicott City, Maryland. I just moved to Athens to attend the University of Georgia and let me tell you, it was a huge culture shock. I always knew that the south was different from us, but we are below the Mason Dixon line, so I thought, “how different could it be?”. After being here for less than two weeks, I now know that I was very wrong; it is extremely different. From hearing people include the word “y’all” in nearly every sentence, to getting ridiculed for never eating at Zaxby’s before, to even not knowing what grits or collard greens were, I have learned a lot here. Although people drive and walk a million times slower than I am used to, I am so blessed to be able to go to school down here and I would not change it for the world. I appreciate having the opportunity to learn more about southern culture, and I will never pass up a chance to hear a good old southern accent, to be called “ma’am”, or to have a door held open for me. I can attest that southern hospitality is definitely a major aspect of life down here, and it has made me realize how little manners northerners have. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live down south and experience the significant shift in culture and values because I know it has made me have a very different outlook on life. I am so excited to spend the next four years and hopefully many more in Georgia!
