I am an undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, completing my final year of a BA in political science and social justice. I have a keen interest in international development and gender studies, and in particular the roles that women take on as leaders in their communities. I was raised by a single mother, and learned from a young age the importance of feminism on a personal level. The most exciting part of university has been the process of turning these personal feelings into a social consciousness, and developing a deeper, more nuanced set of values that guide my interactions with the world.

I have experience coordinating community events with very limited resources, which has included the planning, promotion, and carrying out of fundraisers, educational events, and community gatherings. I enjoy using social media as a tool for fundraising and promotion, and have curated an Online presence for several non-profit initiatives.

I recently took part in the production of a documentary film in Limpopo, South Africa, which gave me the chance to work alongside and learn from talented filmmakers and researchers, and of course, the wonderful women who shared their stories in the film. I think that projects like these are important to changing the ways we think about development. In my view, social justice requires global dialogue and knowledge sharing, creating spaces for marginalized voices to speak and be heard, and the prioritization of decolonizing efforts, both in Canada and worldwide.

Outside of academics and work, my self-care involves reading poetry, attending theatre and art shows, salmon fishing, walking the beautiful trails of Victoria with my dog, enjoying stand-up comedy, tending to my balcony food garden, and visiting local food markets.
