Barnard Silver studied mechanical engineering, with minors in chemical and nuclear engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He completed a master’s degree at Stanford University in engineering mechanics. After military service he joined a manufacturing company in Denver, Colorado, where he designed, tested and started-up equipment for the beet and cane sugar industries in the United States, South America, South Pacific, and Asia, becoming the world expert on continuous centrifugals for separating crystals from molasses.

Barnard directed an agro-industrial complex in the West African country of Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and was knighted by the president of the country for so effectively bringing a new industry on line, using the talents of all forty-two major ethnic groups in the enterprise. He returned to the United States to work first with U and I Group in the largest sugar beet processing plant in North America and then to start his own consulting firm to farming and industrial groups in the food industry.
