Founded in 1703 C.E. between the lake and the sea, the city of Saint Petersburg was the home to various people who moved here by different reasons - often not willingly. Wide sunny streets were full of all types: serfs and poor refugees from the dying northern kingdoms, well-dressed ambitious nobles with rude bodyguards, exotic merchants, young pretty whores, and shady criminals, them all were ruled by Emperor Peter the Great.

The city itself was gorgeous. Thriving gardens under the hot sun and fertile pastures full of fat cattle; the black monolith of Menshikov's obsidian manor - and dozens of shrines, baths, theatres scattered around.

To the west from the city, in the Trade Harbor, hundreds of merchant ships and formidable galleons were anchored, myriads of white sails and little boats hurrying towards the malachite walls of the seaside marketplace - the city looked like an expensive toy, Peter's the Great favorite toy. And to protect it, builders encased it in the thick white walls of limestone, and armored towers, and deep moats.

The city had a thick scent of wealth, safety and power.
