When I visited the Acropolis in April of 2019, I had never felt closer to the sky. The Acropolis once served as a fortress to protect citizens of Ancient Greece, and has held strong and beautiful despite countless attacks and acts of vandalism since its construction. In spite of this, I felt an intense feeling of security as cotton-like clouds enveloped me in a warm embrace. I stood under this same sky back home in my small Upstate New York town. Similar to most other small towns, East Greenbush seems to lack places to go and things to do. Because of this, my best friends and I always managed to find ourselves at Thompson Hill. Thompson Hill is located in a bit of a concealed location, but we found it to be the best place to catch the sunset over the Albany skyline. We gathered there to laugh before high school football games and to debrief after events, yet we also went there to cry together and give advice when circumstances were a lot more solemn. Regardless, the magnificent sky held us in a warm embrace that felt like home. This was the same embrace that I felt at the Acropolis, which had also withstood so many pits and triumphs. The night before I left for UGA, my best friends and I met at Thompson Hill one last time. We laughed through tears as we said our goodbyes. How could I possibly move fifteen hours away from all that I had ever known? Three days later, I felt a sense of peace as I looked outside of my dorm room window to see a sublime sunset over the Terry College of Business, as my best friend sent me pictures of a similar fire in the sky back home. As I continue to settle in and make UGA my new home, I am comforted by the notion that although I am not in the same geographic location as many of those that I love most, we are all embraced by the same love and hospitality of a tender earth.
