I loved being a U.S. Army Soldier. I was honorably discharged after I became a mom and had completed nearly 12 years of active duty service. I began my Army career, right after high school, as a Radio Teletype Operator and I thoroughly enjoyed it. After achieving the rank of Sergeant, I decided to reenlist for the Military Intelligence field and received training as an Electronic Intelligence Interceptor/Analyst and I also chose to accept a special assignment to the Naval Research Lab in Washington, DC. This was highly technical work which required an additional year of training. I also received the Top Secret/SCI security clearance that was needed for doing this work.
In addition to my assigned job duties, I also volunteered for and accepted additional duties including, Reenlistment NCO, Skills Qualification Testing NCO, Commander’s Driver, Barracks NCO and Honor Guard. I have always enjoyed working, being useful and productive, and accepting challenges.
After leaving the military, I attended the University of MD at College Park, pursuing a degree in Social Geography and Urban Studies, while raising my little girl and working part-time in various office settings. I was halfway through my senior year when my little girl and I were struck by a drunk driver, while he was driving for his uncle, NBA player, David Wingate. My daughter received minor facial injuries and recovered fully. I was more severely injured and after almost 12 years of struggling with the debilitating pain from my crushed right ankle every time I stood or walked, I made the agonizing decision to ask the doctors to amputate my lower right leg. The pain was finally gone and, thanks to the awesome Veterans Administration, I have fabulous prosthetic limbs and wonderful support in regaining a more full, active and satisfying life as an amputee.
Born and raised in California and now living in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, I am ready and able to relocate and accept any new challenge that is offered me.
