Before 1880, the area where the city of Linwood is presently located was formerly called Leedsville, but when a post office was being built in the area in 1880, its name changed. The name change came about when the United States Postal Service insisted there was an existing post office in the state of New Jersey with its name conflicting with that of the city, therefore its name was changed. Before the city finally took on the name “Linwood”, the local residents came together and considered various other names like "Brinola", "Pearville", "Viola", and "Geneva", but "Linwood" was chosen.
In 1889, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, Linwood was incorporated as a borough, from a part of Egg Harbor Township. This incorporation was due to a referendum which held on February 19, 1889. About 42 years later, on April 27, 1931, Linwood which was a borough then was now reincorporated as a city.
Over the years, Linwood has experienced a great amount of development, and an area where the city has enjoyed great growth recently, is in sports.
