Lisa M. Gruenhagen

I’m an Associate Professor in Music Education at the College of Musical Arts (CMA) at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. I’m also Program Coordinator and Lead Mentor for Student Teaching for the CMA. I’m a flutist who also plays ukulele and am a specialist in early childhood and general music; curriculum, instruction, and assessment; service learning/school-university partnerships; and collaborative professional development. I received my M.M. and Ph.D. from the Eastman School of Music (music education/flute), and a B.M. in flute performance from Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. I’ve been coordinator and director of large early childhood and elementary music programs housed within community music schools in Rochester, NY and Washington, D.C. while also serving as project manager/grant writer for many private and corporate funded music outreach programs. I have also served on the faculty for the summer institutes and online professional development courses at Project Zero and the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, MA. I have been an instructor in music education at the Eastman School of Music, and served on the faculty at Nazareth College, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Hartwick College. I have served on the Board of Directors for Powers Music School in Boston, MA and the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association. My research involves investigation into the development of children’s musical understanding through creative and collaborative practices, informal music learning, and collaborative professional development. My work is published in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Perspectives(ECMMA), School Music News (NYSSMA), and Advances in Music Education Research.
