Alice McCabe
I'm a nerd girl who writes Ruby for an ecommerce shop. I love working with engaged, passionate people doing ambitious things, and getting the chance to do that every day as a developer makes me very happy.
I have a background in medical research, but I didn't enjoy the field as much as I had hoped and never developed a feeling that I was making a contribution. Along the way, though, I did a little PHP and played with that newfangled Ruby on Rails thing enough to become interested. After a few years, I decided to switch careers and dive into development with both feet. It was expensive, terrifying, and made me feel like the dumbest person alive, but now I'm doing a job I look forward to every day.
I'm currently very back-end focused (heh) and a Rubyist first and foremost, but I have every intention of becoming a polyglot. I'm interested in those functional languages that the code hipsters are always going on about like Clojure, Elixir, and Haskell. I've always been an interface and design nerd--probably a result of being a painfully obsessed Mac fangirl in my formative years--and fully intend to put that to work with front-end work soon enough once I work up the courage to face the challenges of the Javascript ecosystem.
I'm happy/terrified to announce that I'm going to be a mom in December.
