Lizette Engelen
healthcare workplace strategist in Nijmegen, Netherlands
A healthcare workplace strategist, practitioner and researcher with almost 20 years of experience in that field. Combining a passion for healthcare, new ways of working and striving to make things happen, to create flow. I’m intrigued by working environments and their significant potential as a catalyst for change. As Winston Churchill wisely stated, “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us”.
To influence change journeys, corporate climate, the so-called ´smell of the place', I find extremely interesting. But it becomes fun and energizing with the rise of cooperation, co-creation and enthusiasm amongst co-workers.
With a focus on the future, I aim to deploy best practices based on many lessons learned and specialise in co-creating today's value-based working environments. Achieving value by harmonising well-being and efficiency to obtain a supported and sustainable environment for both the organization and their staff.
Inspired by the work of Baarne et al (2010), I started to work with Bricks (buildings, design, ergonomics), Bytes (ICT, agility), Behaviour (HR, ‘smell of the place’, leadership). Seeing the first two as enablers for Behaviour but there was a missing link, so I added the fourth ‘B’ for Branding which represents Identity, communication and cohesion. In 2015, I received acknowledgment from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for adding the forth pillar in their ‘four pillars of the digital workplace’ strategy. Working from a holistic perspective, these four pillars form the foundation of my work. Using guidelines from Service Design, gaming and empathy, I work to meeting people where they are.
Currently working at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, formerly at Radboud Medical University Centre Nijmegen. My interests range from Healing Environment, Behavioural Design, Social innovation to the Future of Work.
Evidence-based working is a cornerstone in my work and together with RESORG (The Responsible Organization) at Radboud University Nijmegen which specialises in Strategic HR, I conduct research for the adoption of new ways of working concepts in healthcare.
