Lizzie Gemmell

I'm in the final year of my neuroscience PhD at Newcastle University. My research aims to improve our understanding of how disease affecting blood vessels in the brain (‘cerebrovascular disease’) can cause dementia. I'm investigating what causes changes to brain cells ('neurons') in people who developed dementia after stroke, using a variety of techniques including 3D stereology, immunohistochemistry and molecular biology.

I'm also really interested in science communication and getting other people excited about science -especially biology and the brain, of course!

I'm obsessed with music and love going to gigs and supporting the North East music scene.

Also adore travelling off the beaten track and outdoorsy adventures.
