Lindsey Melville

Amherst, Massachusetts, United States

Why hello there, my name is Lindsey. I am currently 20 years old and I am a Management major in the Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst.

I'd like to think I have many passions in my life, but dancing has got to be my absolute favorite thing to do. I started dancing when I was three and since then I've never stopped.

My younger brother once told me that he was jealous of me, and when I asked why he said, “because you have a passion.” This baffled me because then we were trying to “figure out” his passion. I never thought of a passion being something you have to figure out, it’s just something you want to do more than anything else and drives you to be better.

Dancing not only keeps me healthy physically, but mentally as well. Dance has gotten me through some pretty tough times in my life and I don't know how I would've coped without it.

Dance allows me to express myself through movement and music. Whatever I'm feeling I can express that through dancing.

I have learned so many important skills from being a dancer. Dancing and technique aside, I have learned to work as a team, be a leader, be a role model, be observant, able to take criticism/corrections, apply corrections, perform, express myself and those are just to name a few. Recently I have also delved into choreographing dances which has really allowed my creativity side to soar.

Now some of you who are reading this may be thinking why are you a business major and not a dance major? Now I've thought a lot about this, but my dream is to be able to open my own dance studio some day.

Dance can be extremely expensive and I would love to be able to some how open a studio and have dance classes that most families can afford. I would love to make it non-profit and just charge enough money to be able keep the studio running, but that's just wishful thinking. I need to make a living too.

Now if I could connect my passion in life and share it with the world I would be a very happy person. Being privileged enough to be able to take dance classes growing up makes me feel like I'm the luckiest girl alive. I would love it if I could open up more opportunities for other people to be able to do the same, on an affordable level. Now that would be amazing.

Now that you know my passion and my plan to share it, I would say you know a little bit more about me.
