I was born in Chicago, Illinois but spent most of my time growing up in Kosciusko, (Koz-ee-esco) Mississippi. Growing up in Mississippi, I learned early about the importance of being involved in community action and political social movements from members of her family and her community who were involved in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The lives of Fannie Lou Hamer, Ida B. Wells-Barnett, and the very strong and independent women in my family and community are among the many real life wonder women who inspire my work as both a teacher/writer and grassroots activist.
