Long KWAN

Receiver of the “The Basil & Muriel Hooper Scholarship” and “Kathleen & Allison Short Scholarship”, Long Kwan completed the Master of Music Studies, majoring in tuba performance, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Previously, he graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University with the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Music (Performance and Pedagogy). During his time in Sydney, he was receiving teaching from Steve Rossé, the Principal Tuba with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He also studied with Roger Bobo, Øystein Baadsvik, Sergio Carolino, Roland Szentpali, Perry Hoogendijk, Tim Buzbee, Josef Bazsinka and Wing-Tsan Lam.

As a sought-after tuba player in Sydney, Kwan has been the guest principal tuba of Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Sinfornia and the principal tuba of Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra, Sydney Conservatorium of Music Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony and Brass Ensemble. In addition, Kwan has played in the original soundtrack recording for the Hollywood movie “The Lego Movie”.

After coming back to his hometown, Hong Kong, Kwan had his China professional debut with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. Being invited by Ballarat Wind Orchestra (Australia) as Guest Principal Tuba, he did a China tour to Beijing, Baoding, Dezhou, Jinan, Xuzhou and Shanghai. Kwan is currently playing with the Macao Orchestra as Guest Principal Tuba.

Being an active tuba player in HK, he has been the Principal Tuba with the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2004 and the Principal Tuba with the Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra, the Parsons Wind Orchestra and the Kwai Tsing Philharmonic Orchestra. He also has served as Guest Principal Tuba with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Millennium Youth Orchestra, Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong and the CUHK Symphony Orchestra.

In the past years, he has performed with Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhongshan and Macao. In 2010, he performed with the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra in Shanghai Expo 2010 and he was invited to perform Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto in the ABRSM Diploma Awards Ceremony 2010. In December 2010, Kwan has played the complete Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto with the Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra.

Aside from the rich performing experiences, Kwan also has devoted himself into education. He has been teaching in many primary and secondary schools for years. He teaches
