Lorena Guzman

Born in the temperate valleys of Cochabamba, Bolivia and raised in a post-colonial Amazonian city, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, brimming with lush vegetation housing macaws, monkeys, sloths, piranhas and jaguars… by the age of 12 I’d lived in 3 countries including Peru & Australia. With Spanish being my mother tongue, five languages have danced through my speech, five cultures have given me the keys to understanding the sensibility of people’s lives and nuances of their passions… English, Portuguese, Italian and French. Through language, the curiosity to explore worlds unlike my own was born.

The passion for documenting life’s experiences in words or images, started very early in my childhood. Writing letters and journalling were as instinctive as breathing, and the prospect of owning a camera and later taking photos, an obsession. Their retrospective value increased over time, especially once situations drastically changed. In documenting their immediate impact, there was a sense of urgency. Witnessing the extremes of realities of the 3rd world and then contrasting a life experience in the 1st world, catapulted an early sense of global awareness and social conscience that has remained with me.

Over time these seeds of experience, led me to study Media Communications at RMIT in Melbourne, where I fell in love with French cinema and culture. Since then, life’s lessons, the pleasant and difficult, have merged and moulded me into becoming a confident, independent, positive, creative, passionate woman, one that I and my four children can be proud of. These, are also the qualities I seek to encourage in others and are the qualities I continue to seek in the world.

Capturing and expressing the world creatively with a sense of curiosity, in as constructive and honest a way as possible, is my greatest passion.
Sharing this world with others and connecting different perceptions respectfully is a blessing and does justice to this thing we call Life.
