Loren Weiss Stuyvesant

Loren Weiss is currently a student at the prestigious Stuyvesant High School in New York City. A public school with an emphasis on math and science, Stuyvesant provides students like Weiss with many intellectual, aesthetic, athletic, social, and moral opportunities. Stuyvesant has a solid history of producing exceptional scholars, including four Nobel Laureates. Additionally, the school receives distinction as one of the original three specialized high schools in New York City designed to cater to the needs of the academically gifted. Though these schools have no admission fee, they do require a high placement on entrance exams, accepting only students entering 9th or 10th grades. Loren Weiss numbers as 1 of 3,000 enrollees. Through his placement in Stuyvesant High School, Loren Weiss receives a high-quality education as well as the opportunity to foster his chess skills. His team at Stuyvesant placed first in a competition in Nashville in 2009, second in Atlanta in 2008, and second in Columbus in 2010. Furthermore, he regularly graces the top 100 students in his age bracket nationally, and earned 16th place out of 82 in the 2010 grade nationals in Orlando. In addition to participating with the Stuyvesant chess team, Loren Weiss belongs to the Marshall Chess Club and is a member of the United States Chess Federation. On top of his heavy workload at Stuyvesant, Loren Weiss volunteered in the office of Shannon Taylor, an attorney in New York’s criminal court law department. He also participated in the Free to Breathe Lung Cancer 5K Run/Walk in Philadelphia. Weiss is slated to graduate from Stuyvesant in 2012.
