Lorraine Silvetz
Lorraine C. Silvetz is a Psychotherapist with a Master's degree from NYU School of Social Work specializing in the treatment of returning veterans suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Ms. Cancro collaborates with scientists at the Newport Brain Research Laboratory in research and treatment related to TBI and PTSD impacting military members, their families and civilians.
Ms. Cancro served as Mental Health Editor launching several series for Exceptional Parent (EP) Magazine, a 40 year old award winning disability magazine. Series topics include returning veterans who suffer from TBI and PTSD, chronic pain, autism, among other disorders. The series of articles furthered her efforts to spread awareness of PTSD and other stress disorders which are impacting the population exponentially. She is currently a contributing writer with the Stewardship Report which is an affiliate of the Luce Foundation.
Ms. Cancro also serves as Founder and Executive Director of the Global Stress Initiative, (GSI), a program under the auspices of the International Committee Against Mental Illness (ICAMI) which is led by Director, Robert Cancro, MD, Chairman Emeritus of NYU Department of Psychiatry. The GSI has 3 time Emmy award winning anchor and best-selling author, Rita Cosby, as spokesperson. At GSI, they advocate for further the treatment of returning military members, their families and civilian survivors of trauma.
GSI promotes alternative techniques for the alleviation of stress including transcendental meditation (TM) through the David Lynch Foundation as well as on behalf of the Brain Treatment Center's (BTC) Magnetic Resonance Therapy (MRT) protocol for the treatment of a myriad of neurological and psychiatric disorders. . GSI launched a series of awareness raisers with these groups in an effort to educate the public on these alternative or non-invasive techniques for the alleviation of stress. Earning a film degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts helped contribute to Ms. Cancro's creative approach to advocacy in the world of mental health. Previously, she created a partnership between GSI and the acclaimed Hollywood Director David Lynch's Foundation. She coordinated and planned several promotional films at previous foundations, including the International Brain Research Foundation, where she served as Director of Development.
