Lost and Found

"Lost and Found" is a photography project done by a group of young adults who are part of a Pre-GED and media program in Harlem, NYC.

Part of this program was not only a 6 week photography workshop, where the students could learn basic knowledge of photography and apply it in a portrait and documentary project, but also a film-making class.

"It is like we could experience the life of a photographer" one of the students says.

The photography goes along with poetry, that the students have been writing in class. It's about their stories and life experiences, about struggles, dreams and hopes. The main theme is "overcoming".

On September 12th there will be a multimedia exhibit at the Fortune Society in Harlem, which will display photographs, video and writing by the students.

The Fortune Society is a nonprofit social service and advocacy organization, founded in 1967, whose mission is to support successful reentry from prison and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities.

The Fortune Society's pre-GED program in Harlem is part of the Young Men's Initiative (YMI) and is generously funded by Department of Probation (DOP), the Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) and the Heckscher Foundation.

The project was supported by Berlin-based photographer Kerstin Müller, who studied youth work and photography in Germany. She is currently living in NYC.
