Louis Bacon
As a lifelong conservationist, environmental philanthropist and outdoor sportsman, Louis Bacon has spent more than 20 years advocating for the conservation and protection of natural resources, both in the United States and around the world. A native of North Carolina, Mr. Bacon was raised with a reverence for the natural world as a hunting and fishing sportsman, which spurred a lifelong passion for land and water conservation. In 1992, Mr. Bacon created The Moore Charitable Foundation (MCF) to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations that work to preserve and protect wildlife habitat and improve water systems. Since then, the foundation has provided significant funding to local and national conservation and environmental protection agencies.
In June 2012, Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe announced that Mr. Bacon intends to donate a conservation easement totaling approximately 90,000 acres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains bordering the San Luis Valley in Colorado. This easement will provide the foundation for the proposed new Sangre de Cristo Conservation Area.
Mr. Bacon owns Trinchera Blanca Ranch located in the San Luis Valley. The Trinchera section of the ranch is currently protected by a conservation easement held by Colorado Open Lands. The new conservation easement that Mr. Bacon intends to donate is to protect Blanca – thus protecting all 172,000 acres of land.
Most recently, the National Audubon Society announced that it would honor Mr. Bacon with the prestigious Audubon Medal, an award that has only been given 51 times over the 107 years of the Audubon's existence and is given in recognition of outstanding achievements in conservation and environmental protection.
Mr. Bacon is the founder and CEO of Moore Capital Management, LP and received his B.A. in American Literature from Middlebury College and his M.B.A. in Finance from Columbia Business School. Mr. Bacon currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Middlebury College and the Board of Overseers at Columbia Business School.
