As a lawyer, my initiation into the world of long-term care insurance was prompted by my own personal experience.
My father and law partner for many years became ill. It became apparent as a result of his illness that we would have to follow through with the difficult decision of placing him in an assisted living facility. Prior to his illness, he had purchased a long-term care insurance policy. To offset the high cost of his care in the facility, my sister and I requested his long-term care insurance company to pay some of the charges associated with the care he needed and was receiving. The request was denied because the assisted living facility was not a “home” and the policy was a “home care policy”. As a result I was forced to file a lawsuit against the company. We won.
It was during that process that I first realized how neglected the field of long term care was. Not only were there no legal decisions associated with long term care insurance policies, there were very few if any lawyers addressing this very important issue. Following the success of my father’s case, I made the decision to make a career shift and start assisting other elderly people and their families in need of these services and that’s what I’ve been doing. Since that time I have assisted hundreds of people through court action to force insurance companies to honor their contracts.
