I owe it all to the Vietnamese Student Association. Before entering college, I told myself that I would just nonchalantly join the club that all the typical Vietnamese students join. Little did I know, this club would mean more to me than I would ever realize. Coming into college, I was by myself. I was the only student from Stone Mountain high school who got accepted into UGA. This was a new beginning for me, a whole new lifestyle. I had nobody but myself in this completely new world that was 50 miles away from home. I struggled to find an authentic and personal connection with others as I found out that many people here, unlike me, came to UGA with their friends from high school. I’ve only ever met people on a surface level and never more. That was until I found VSA, which stands for the Vietnamese Student Association. This “club” soon became my life. Here, I reunited with people that I didn’t even know I knew. I discovered totally random strangers that eventually became some of my closest friends. This “club” provided me with a community that I had longed for. Stone Mountain high school was a predominantly black school which ultimately led to a struggle in finding an asian community that I could relate to but VSA gave me the privilege to finally find others like me. Others who understood who I am and where I came from. Others who shared the same asian culture that I did. Others who I could talk to about anything! VSA isn’t just some asian club on campus. VSA is much more; a lifestyle, a purpose, and a blessing.
