Lucie Carruthers
I am a freelance writer and middle school English teacher who really loves writing! I don't mean, "Goodie, goodie, I get to teach a five-paragraph essay to over fifty middle-schoolers this week," but I contemplate poetic phrases while brushing my teeth, have conversations with my original book characters (Hey, don't go there—I'm not crazy), and weave the practice of writing into the most integral parts of my life—my soul and heart. Like some people have the passion and drive to cover their bodies with tattoos, I want to wrap my spirit in a cocoon of words.
On the practical side, I enjoy reading and gardening. The attitude of a famous contemporary Nebraskan, Larry, the Cable Guy, who quotes when something needs to be accomplished, "Let's get 'er done," mimics my own philosophy.
This year, my biggest goal to "get done" is to savor my last year in teaching before retiring. To leave with the feeling that all my i's are dotted and t's crossed, I'm writing about three decades of change in the classroom.
When I am not writing for me, correcting writing assignments, or pulling weeds (I put reading into my schedule by listening to books while working outdoors or walking), I will write, revise, or edit for you.
