Lucinda Vaughan-Steel
Junior Copywriter in London
My desire to work in marketing stemmed from an early age. At around the age of 12 I won a competition to ask Nicki Chapman (the judge on Pop Idol in the early 2000's) how she had gotten to her position in the industry - I'd admired her and thought her position was a good career goal as a music obsessed teenager. She said one word: Marketing.
So, I headed over to About.com (Wikipedia was still in it's very early days) and looked up marketing career paths. One career path was as a copywriter. At school I was enjoying writing in my English classes so thought this would be a good entry point for me. I found City University was the best place to study a writing discipline in the country - journalism. I wanted to stay in the vibrant bright lights of my home city so pegged a Journalism BA at City University as my degree to break into marketing.
I left there with a First Class Honours degree in Journalism and scored a job at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (PlayStation) as a Junior Copywriter - exactly what I'd set out to do 12 years earlier.
Now the goal is to become a master at my craft, but with many steps in between.
I'm now on a daily quest to improve my knowledge and expertise. I follow a number of podcasts (recommended: The Craft of Marketing, Internet Marketing Podcast), websites (Inbound.org) and books (currently reading The Storyteller's Secret) to improve myself as a marketer.
I love marketing, technology, video games, startups, American football and dogs.
I've had experience in:
- Content marketing
- Copywriting
- Outreach
- PR
- Social media
My music obsession has now turned to technology and I would love nothing more than to market the next innovation.
