Adelaide Area, Australia

As a young Muslim Australian Somali woman, I understand that greater dialogue and understanding is needed between the Islamic and Western civilizations to move forward. I have a passion for social change and social entrepreneurship, co-founding and co-directing of the grass-roots initiative, Muslim Girls Kollective of South Australia since 2008.

The mandate of the Muslim Girls Kollective is to decrease social isolation, increase social inclusion and improve mental health and social well being of Muslim and refugee girls and young women in South Australia. To build bridges between Muslim and refugee communities and the wider Australian community to create awareness and understanding using the platform of youth empowerment. To provide a place where Muslim and refugee girls and young women can have fun and socialize in a safe and supportive environment and make new friends and networks. Building resilience and empowering young Muslim and refugee women to become contributing members of both their diverse communities and the wider Australian society.

I currently work at the National Union of Workers in Adelaide, South Australia in an advocacy and legal role. My passions are volunteering, cooking and travelling. I am open to opportunities to link with other professionals, NGOs, government and international organisations.
