Creating a design aesthetic to satisfy desire for the abstract and the minimal, as well as providing a serious commercial proposition represents the ultimate challenge for me as a developing designer. The two concepts are opposing yet inextricably linked, as my target market is mid-range designer prêt-a-porter.‘Achromania’ collection will seek to liberate and empower the wearer. It will comprise a collection of 8 interchangeable womenswear garments, some pieces having two equally wearable sides, presenting the wearer with the ultimate style forward solution in designer clothing. This collection provides flexibility, cost efficiency and ultimate functionality as some pieces may be worn either way round, and for day or night; the wearer creates her own aesthetic. It is a vehicle of empowerment for the style seeking individual to silently express her personal creative opinion.
Digital print will feature on one side of some of the pieces. A design emanating from the fibrous content of the iris of an eye will appear as a large motif. Some of these fibres will appear stretched out to magnify the presence of the print on the garments. The significance of the eye design is to reference organic beauty, the way we see and are seen. We perceive the world through prejudiced eyes as a result of our experiences within it. This collection seeks to highlight the way we do not see people because of our inherent societal prejudices and stereotyped imprinting. The silhouettes will appear minimalist and fairly abstract, leaving the observer to perceive the print and overall design aesthetic, drawing upon thought and appreciation for what’s really there, not what we expect to see.
