Amherst Ma
Hi, I'm Luke. I was born in Georgetown MA and am both a Swiss and U.S citizen. I am currently a student at the Isenberg School of Management at Umass Amherst. I am Governor of Sylvan, and work with a wide variety of student clubs and Umass staff in order to plan events, advocate for students, and keep the best interests of my constituents in mind.
My first college business ventue was at the Extravaganja festival in Amherst. I sold chilled water bottles to those advocating for the prohibition of marijuana. I used the concept of $1 not being "real" money in order to generate large volumes of sales, making it easy for customers to open their wallets. Walking through the crowds like a baseball vendor, I was known as waterboy. Usually when I was stopped to sell one water, more people flocked at the oppurtunity to quench their thirst on that hot day. I sold about four cases of water individually each year. Where other vendors had the limited space of a table, I had the whole festival grounds! I do plan on doing more sophisticated metrics in this coming year.
Last year I ran a convienance store out of my dorm room, serving the hungry after all the dining halls were closed. I specialized in late night breakfast sandwiches. The smell of Bacon was my primary marketing tool, alongside word of mouth and social media. This year i've taken on the Waffle Business, and bike with my waffle iron and batter to serve Umass house parties. It's one of the entertaining gigs i've had yet.
I'm an OIM major, so naturally efficiency fascinates me. One of the reasons I transitioned to waffles is that from the cooking perspective, there is only one operation at the actual party. Unlike with waffles, cooking sandwiches required cooking the eggs, bacon, and toasting the bagels all on the same infomercial cooker, taking varying times to cook, as well as becoming a messy affair. If contained, the waffle batter is much easier to deal with, limiting the cooking operation to one task. Maybe I'll see you out there! Our topping option include, maple syrup, whipped cream, chocolate chips, and walnuts. For October we will be featuring pumpkin waffles.
