Lydia Clemmons PhD, MPH
Lydia Clemmons has over 30 years of experience in the design, management, implementation and evaluation of international health and development programs in more than 25 countries, and specializes in social and behavior change communication (SBCC). Her experience includes extensive work with numerous multilateral and bilateral donors, host-country governments, and international as well as local non-government organizations (NGOs). Throughout her career, Dr. Clemmons’ technical expertise has supported the development and use of evidence-based state-of-the-art tools and interventions which have been consistently recognized as global best practices in social and behavior change. She is known for her innovative work in designing SBCC strategies and multi-channel communications tailored to country-specific contexts and cultural settings. One of the early pioneers of applying mobile phone technologies to support health and HIV/AIDS programming, Dr. Clemmons continues to promote the effective use of new technologies, along with traditional cultural resources, for strategic communications. Her innovative work includes leading the design and development of: the Text Me! Flash Me! Helpline providing HIV prevention and treatment information via interactive SMS and live phone counseling for most-at-risk populations in Ghana, the Know More, Be More Helpline providing information about the first 1000 Days of maternal and child nutrition via SMS and IVR messages for agriculture extension workers and health extension workers in Ethiopia, the first 1000 Days multi-channel SBCC Kits for parents and smallholder farmers in Tanzania, and the green pendelu as a non-verbal communication strategy promoting improved maternal health practices in Mali. Dr. Clemmons has a PhD. in medical anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, an MPH in International Health from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University.
