I have always loved kids and knew from a young age that I wanted to work with them. Thus, as any young girl would, I looked for babysitting jobs in my neighborhood. I have watched many kids over the years, and have my fair share of horror stories. The worst kids I ever nannied for were my neighbors during the summer before senior year of high school. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I loved the parents and the kids in general but watching these 3 boys ages 3,5,7 for 5 days a week was easily the worst way I could’ve spent my summer. The parents were working from home because of the pandemic, which meant that I could never say no to anything because then the boys would just run and ask their parents (who never told them no). I tried to deter them from interrupting work/calls but dragging kids back downstairs while they were screaming bloody murder was above my pay grade. Thus I was forced to follow protocol, and it was yes day, every day. These kids would scream, make insane messes, fight like dogs, and throw “toddlers and tiaras” level tantrums. The only break I got was during their nap/rest time when I would do the dishes and cry. That said, I’ve had a lot of other great families, one of which I’ve been helping with for 10 years. The kids and I basically grew up together. It would’ve been easy to stop babysitting after my horrific experience, but I still know that I want to work with kids in my professional life, and I’ll take the tough days if it means I get to work with the diamonds too.
