Make that Difference

Reading, United Kingdom

Make that Difference is a campaign for young people between the ages of 11 - 16 year olds in the Reading area of the United Kingdom. After being stereotyped against one too many times, we founded the campaign on November 25 2012.

We aim to work against the negative stereotype of teenagers - we want to actively disprove it by helping you to volunteer in the local community. So far, some of the activities we've done include volunteering at an animal farm at the MERL, hosting an afternoon tea party with live music for the elderly, organising a book collection for a local Oxfam, and volunteering at a Teddy Bear's Picnic again at the MERL.

Right now, we’re looking to gain as much support as possible, from both adults and young people. Young people who are members of the campaign will help to promote the events we organise, volunteer at the events, put up posters and keep an eye out for regular volunteering opportunities. By increasing membership, we can then host more volunteering opportunities, and our message will be more noticed in the area.

There are many ways in which you can help to achieve our goals, but here are the main three.

  • Let us know of volunteering opportunities for groups. The more volunteering we do, the better, and we're more than happy to come along and help out.
  • In schools, help us to set up 'branches of the campaign'. This should involve one or two organisers, who contact the other organisers in the area frequently about event, and are in charge of the campaign within their area. There should also be three publicists, who promote our pages, and put up posters e.t.c. The number of volunteers in unlimited.
  • Help us to spread the word – tell as many people as you can about us, and even put up our posters in local areas.

In the future, we're looking forward to working with Berkshire Youth, Fixers, MP Alok Sharma, and the charities 3munkees and George's Marvellous Medicine Fund.

In short, we were tired of being judged as bad people because of the actions of other teenagers in the country, and so, to become more respected, we started this campaign to raise awareness and gain support of the local citizens.
