Matthew A. Kuhlmann
Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, I came to Bloomington as a direct admit to the nationally renowned Kelley School of Business and subsequently fell in love with the whole campus. Although just 2.5 hours from where I was raised, everything is different out here; the pace is just so much slower. I love it. Everybody is friendly and will go out of their way to help you. Even if you just dropped your wallet, you can expect someone else to be bending down to hand it to you. My dad affectionately summed up my description as, "Living with 40,000 of your newest buddies and learning about 5,000 townies who are pretty cool themselves." While his numbers might be off, I feel like he got the general gist of my transition here.
Growing up sports were my life. Football was my first love and I am not ashamed to admit that. But in a close second was wrestling, which I was admittedly much better at than football. I participated in those sports until the completion of my high school career. I spent 14 and 13 years, respectively, in these sports and they made me the hard working and motivated man I am today. But around my Junior year I picked up another sport: Rugby. I instantly was hooked and, as it ended up, IU has a very good rugby team that I joined the Fall of my incoming semester.
When I think about what I am called to do in this life, I feel like I am being tugged and pulled in many directions. But the strongest pull is one divined from a sense of duty. Specifically: Duty, Honor, Country. These words spoke to me and I decided to enroll in the Army Reserve Officers Training Corps at Indiana University. I still feel called to serve, and it is my goal to serve my country in whatever way possible, whether it means I take up arms or a pen and paper.
