Malice & Mario Sweet

Real-life couples making music together rarely sustain long relationships in either endeavor, but Seattle's Malice and Mario Sweet are meant to last -- in love and music.

Their 2011 debut EP Happy 2 Year, released on Valentine's Day in commemoration of their 2nd wedding anniversary, established the couple as the forerunners of the burgeoning Northwest soul music scene. Building on the buzz of out-of-nowhere lead single "Speed of Light," Happy 2 Year reached #3 on KEXP 90.3's Blues charts, landed on Kevin Nottingham's Top 10 Soulful EP's of 2011, and received love and recognition from media outlets local and global, including The Seattle Times, BBC Radio 1, and The Stranger. "Speed of Light" was enthusiastically deemed "the best song in the world right now" by Stranger columnist and KEXP DJ Larry Mizell Jr.

The Sweets' music is a heartfelt homage both to their love of each other, and to the last three decades of R & B and soul classics. Malice's tender, alluring vocals and Mario's Phonte-esque falsettos stand well on their own on self-titled solo tracks, but are at their strongest when crafting harmonies together. Just as they build a life together, Malice and Mario Sweet's songs feature both vocalists singing lyrics together in a perfect union. This genuine connection is palpable throughout Happy 2 Year, whether on the funked-up 80's stomp of "Living Life," the propulsive "Speed of Light," or throwback jam "Date Nite."

Happy 2 Year was re-released in November 2011 as a deluxe edition. Malice and Mario Sweet are humbled by and grateful for the praise and recognition the project has garnered, and are hard at work on a follow-up.
